art work and architectural designs

Art Work:

The original inspiration for these collages, paintings, and line drawings are my Nordic heritage, a culture deeply sympathetic to mood.  In Norway, mood is rendered through the built form, layered impressions, the mountains, the fjords, and the clouds.  Mood is communicated also through the use of indirect and constricted light, a revealing of blurred and muted light that deepens tones and emphasizes its subjects in a different way.  Shadows grow deeper as the light becomes cooler, and there is a transformation in vegetation and urban settings as subtle hues express varying shades of darkness.  My ability to express variations of Nordic light and texture develops from my personal experiences with topography, vegetation, and under-explored urban settings.  Quality of light and form is significant in my work as it conveys mood, often relating my New England subject matter to my cultural past.  As an artist, I constantly search the New England landscape for similar expressions of mood. Twilight, abnormal rock formations, clusters of trees branches, rainstorms, swift cloud accumulations, natural and built juxtapositions, narrow views that constricts values of light, and rapidly approaching fronts, all serve to connect me to me Nordic sensibilities.

Photographic Work:

My photographic work involves capturing crisp colorful forms and patterns, along with unusual and oblique angles and perspectives to bring attention to architectural and cultural scenes.  Layered views are also critical; to construct a narrative or hint of mystery with regard to juxtaposed forms.  For the most part these works are stand-alone images, and at times they are reference photos of inspiration, contemplation, and amusement.

Architectural Work:

Outside of the classroom, design work has been the focus of my career, relying on kitchen and room renovations, deck designs, exterior renovations, as well as full-service house construction.  I have found it important to ground my teaching in design work, in order to provide students with current trends and ideas in construction, material use, and representation.
